About Samuel

Samuel is a professional trumpet player and recording musician whose work includes sessions for BTS. Based in Los Angeles, he performs with three groups and has studied with Arturo O’Farrill and Terence Blanchard. A keen educator, bandleader and host, he enjoys connecting with people and making music approachable.

What you can work on

Lessons explore improvisation, performance, songwriting and harmony at a level that suits you. Beginners learn a concept and try it immediately, so Samuel can identify progress and the areas that need support. Repertoire is chosen for each student.

Fundamentals remain important at every level. Depending on your needs, work may cover technique, melodic phrasing, arranging and tuning. More advanced lessons can develop your range, improvisation over specific themes and techniques used by leading musicians.

At times, you may set exercises aside and simply play. This helps you distinguish a practice mindset from a performance mindset and brings variety into the lesson. Everyone learns differently and at a different pace. Ideas that feel challenging now may become useful later, just as Samuel has found in his own studies.

Background

• Bachelor of Arts in Music, trumpet, through UCLA’s Global Jazz Studies programme, studying directly with Arturo O’Farrill and Terence Blanchard.
• Awards and scholarships include the UCLA Gluck Global Jazz Ensemble, an ASCAP Foundation Composers Award in 2022 and a Herb Alpert Foundation Award.
• Judging work for the International Songwriting Competition in Tennessee, including unsigned artists across reggae, world music, classical, jazz, pop, rock and electronic dance music.
• Selected for recording sessions on BTS’s album Map of the Soul: 7, a release with more than 100 million streams.
• Teaching support and student mentoring at the Francis Parker Jazz Camp in California.
• Performance experience with Ambassadors of Soul, the San Diego funk band led by trombonist Andy Geib, and the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory led by Gilbert Castellanos.

A message from Samuel

Hello! I’m excited to teach you through Sound Qualia.

Since I was 15, I have recorded with groups ranging from my local funk band, Ambassadors of Soul, to major artists such as BTS. In Los Angeles, I play in La Compañía, a salsa group; SkubaTruba, a Balkan group; and Little Dipper, a jazz quintet. Alongside playing five instruments, I compose using notation software and digital audio workstations, usually Logic.

I love teaching and feel fortunate to have learned from wonderful teachers in many areas of life. In music school, I studied with composers including Terence Blanchard, Dan Rosenboom and Arturo O’Farrill. I look forward to sharing what I have learned over the years, and to learning from you too!
